Keeping Hope in Uncertainity.

81

We may be living through times of unprecedented change, but in uncertainty lies
the power to influence the future. Now it’s not the time to despair, but to act
accordingly. Your opponents would love you to believe that it is hopeless, that you
have no power, that there is no reason to act and above all you can’t win, but hope
is the essence of life. Many of us could not even live a life of peace without having
hope deep inside the heart. Life is unpredictable, hard and notorious at times,
things go out of hand and beyond of our control many times. But it is always better
to explore a gainful uncertainty than to sit in a painful certainty. Many a times in
life we’ll look far into our future with immense uncertainty. None of us can predict
the future, so enjoying life one day at the fullest will remain much easier and
fulfilling.

Other than the uncertainties in our individual lives, worse than these is the arrival
of climate change, faster, harder and more devastating than the scientists
anticipated. Hope doesn’t mean denying these realities. It means facing them and
remembering what else the 21 ’st century has brought including the movements,
heroes and shifts in consciousness that address these things now. Around the world,
all eyes are on the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The pandemic is challenging
families, communities, health care systems and the government. There is no
doubting the severity of the public health crisis we are facing.
The travel restrictions made necessary by COVID-19 won’t stop us from working
on the world’s most devastating emergencies, helping to protect at-risk
communities.

Today, as we confront a global health crisis, we are strengthened by years of
experience that have shown us that even when problems seem insurmountable,
change is always possible maybe it’s a bit uncertain. The current situation is an
invisible adversary. It knows no borders and rapid spread through communities

sends the important lesson that our own health is only as good as that of the person
standing next to us. In this way, the connectedness, reinforcing the fact that hope is
the elxier. This has been a truly remarkable decade for movement building, social

change and deep shifts in ideas, perspective and frameworks for large parts of the
population. It is important to say what hope is not : it is not the belief that
everything was, is or will be fine. The evidence is all around us of tremendous
suffering and destruction. Hope locates itself in the premises that we don’t know
what will happen and that in the spaciousness of uncertainty is room to act. When
you recognize uncertainty, you recognize that you may be able to influence the
outcomes. Hope is an embrace of the unknowable, an alternative to the certainty of
both optimists and pessimists.
